OPTIONAL
Exploration Tour - Arrive in Columbus prior to the start of the Grand National to join us on an optional tour to The National Museum of the United States Air Force in the Dayton area. Experience the National Road, Rte 40, as we navigate to and from the museum. The National Museum of the United States Air Force located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio is the service's national institution for preserving and presenting the Air Force story. The museum is the world's largest and oldest military aviation museum featuring more than 400 aerospace vehicles amid more than 17 acres of indoor exhibit space. The museum's galleries present many rare and one-of-a-kind aircraft and aerospace vehicles and thousands of historical items that chronicle the evolution of military flight from the Wright brothers to today's stealth aircraft. Sensory-rich exhibits feature mannequins, artifacts, sound effects and theatrical lighting that place aircraft in context and bring history to life by dramatizing and personalizing the events depicted. Visitors walking through the museum can view multiple galleries focusing on the various eras of military aviation and Air Force history, including World War I, World War II, Korea, Southeast Asia, the Cold War and the present. This is a great tour for a family expedition. Presidential and R&D Aviation Galleries are available for touring by taking a short ride on a museum bus over to the facilities which are located on the controlled-access portion of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. These tours often fill up quickly. Because these two facilities are on the base a current government-issued photo ID (i.e. state ID or driver's license) is required for citizens of the U.S. All foreign visitors must present an original passport (a NEXUS card is an acceptable form of ID for Canadian citizens). Those under 18 must be escorted by an adult (one adult per two children); children are not required to produce identification when accompanying their parents. NOTE: This tour entails a fair amount of walking. The museum has a limited number of wheelchairs and strollers available for your use in the building at no charge. Museum exhibit layout

Grand National Officially Begins

Secret Treasure Special Tour – For those who arrive early there will be a WEDNESDAY ONLY tour of The S & S Coach Company plant in Lima, OH. The Standard of Excellence Since 1876 - Over one hundred and thirty years is a long time to be in business. And it's particularly notable if the company in question manufactures the oldest brand in a highly competitive and specialized field. This longevity takes on added distinction when that company has also been the industry leader for the greater part of its existence. S&S was founded in 1876 as the Sayers and Scovill Company by William Sayers and A. R. Scovill. The funeral coach business was thriving at the turn of the 20th century, sharp competition helped create the superlative standards of craftsmanship and design which remain an S&S tradition to this day. The S&S Coach Company is the only true survivor of the pre-automovitve funeral coach era, still in continuous operation. The S&S Coach Company is still recognized as the leader in professional car excellence.

Exploration Tour - Experience the National Road, Rte 40, as we navigate to and from the Dayton area to tour The National Museum of the United States Air Force. NOTE: Consideration will be given to adding this second tour to the Air Force Museum, particularly if the Tuesday tour sells out. (See tour information in Tuesday tour.)

Discover Columbus Tour – Travel by motor coach through historic Old Dublin, Linworth, Old Worthington, along the famous High Street area of The Ohio State University campus, the Short North art district, the Arena District and view the Santa Maria. After viewing the highlights from Dublin to downtown Columbus from our motorcoach we will make two tour stops at sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Across the street from our first stop is the Ohio State House which is known as one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States. If time permits we will allow a brief stroll through the renovated State House on your own before walking directly across the street to tour The Ohio Theatre. The Ohio Theatre built for Marcus Loew opened on March 17, 1928. The theater was designed by Thomas Lamb and decorated and furnished by Anne Dornan. The design has been described as lavish Spanish-Baroque. The first movie shown was Divine Woman, starring Greta Garbo and Lars Hanson. The theater organ is a magnificent Morton Theater Pipe organ installed at a cost of $21,000 in 1928. Of the four identical Mighty Morton Organs built in 1928 for other Loew’s theaters, the Ohio’s Morton is the only instrument still in its original installation. View the façade of the old post office built in 1912, German Village, the first automotive dealership built strictly for that purpose in Ohio and possibly the country and the Columbus Museum of Art as we navigate to Franklin Park to tour Franklin Park Conservatory and their Chihuly art glass collection. Originally built in 1895, today it is a premier horticultural and educational institution. The conservatory contains more than 400 plant species. Collections include: Himalayan Mountains, Tropical Rainforest, Desert, Succulent Patio, Bonsai Courtyard, Pacific Island Water Garden, Showhouse with orchid and tropical bonsai collections and Palm House with more than 40 species of palms. A single glance at the original Victorian glass palace leaves no doubt that Franklin Park Conservatory has a rich and significant history to tell. This is truly an explorer’s expedition around the city as you “Discover Columbus”.

Discover Cars & Sweets Tour – Travel by motor coach to savor some sweet automotive treats as well as some sweet chocolate delights. The tour will stop to see Tom Sutphen’s Antique Car and Fire Apparatus Collection in nearby Hilliard. Also a tour of Team Rahal formula race cars, the headquarters of Rahal Letterman Racing which is one of the finest race shop facilities of its type in the world of motorsports. Encompassing nearly 60,000 square feet of space in suburban Columbus, Ohio, it houses, in two adjacent buildings, all of the personnel and equipment necessary to develop, field and maintain Rahal Letterman's IRL IndyCar Series and American Le Mans Series programs and in the past has housed the team's Champ Car, Atlantic, Indy Lights and Formula BMW programs. BMW Mobile Traditions Program cares for and maintains a fleet of historic BMW race cars which includes fabled race machines from throughout BMW's racing history from Le Mans to Mid-Ohio and all stops in between. The cars are maintained in perfect running condition and are transported around the world for participation in historic festivals such as the Monterey Historic or the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Finish with a tour of Anthony Thomas Candy Factory serving your sweet tooth with fine gourmet chocolates since 1952. After WWII what became a father-son business, Anthony's Confectionary, ventured in to an ice cream making and lunch business. This increased candy sales and soon the candy business was growing faster than their other ventures. Realizing the quality of the candy was creating a demand, Tom and his father decided to make it a full time trade, using their first names they formed the Anthony-Thomas Candy Company in 1952. Today from their 152,000 square foot factory they make candy for their 14 local retail outlets, have a fund-raising division and contract-manufacturing division. They are one of the largest family-owned and operated candy companies in the mid-west and produce an average of 50,000 pounds of chocolate on two shifts daily.
